According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy (AAT), involves the use of specially trained animals that meet specific criteria to help improve physical, social, emotional, or cognitive functions. While dogs and horses are the most commonly used animals in pet therapy, other animals like cats, fish, guinea pigs, and more can also be included, depending on the therapeutic goals of a person’s treatment plan.
